FREE Workshop For Western MA. Families on Pre-ETS

 Does your child have special needs and is of "Transition" age (14 - 22)?  Have you heard the term "Pre-ETS" at a Team meeting or Transition meeting and want more information?

The Federation for Children with Special Needs is collaborating with Easterseals MA for a one-hour Lunch and Learn on March 30, 2021 at 12:00 pm.

 

Please join us for a panel of Pre-ETS providers serving the Western Mass area including Easterseals, Viability, Stavros, and NEBA as well as MRC.

 

Panelists will be answering these questions:
1. What are Pre-ETS?
2. What are the components of Pre-ETS?
3. Why is it important that students access these services?
4. What is the school’s role in Pre-ETS?
5. What is MRC’s (Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission) role?
6. How do you connect to the services?

For parents and family members of persons with an intellectual or developmental disability, this seminar provides an overview of the legal consequences of reaching the age of emancipation at 18. Discussion will include a description of the range of decision- making options.

We will discuss Guardianship, the powers and duties of a guardian, the procedure of initiating a guardianship, and substituted judgement. We will also cover Supported Decision Making as an alternative to Guardianship, along with basic concepts such as Legal Emancipation, Presumption of Competence, Least Restrictive Alternative, and prioritization of the areas requiring decision- making.

Meredith H. Greene practices in the firm’s Trust & Estate Department and focuses on special needs planning, estate planning, guardianship, conservatorship, adult services advocacy, and government benefits advocacy. Ms. Greene was trained as a parent advocate representing children and families in the area of special education through the Federation for Children with Special Needs. She is a member of multiple organizations on behalf of individuals with special needs.

Take part in OAR’s inaugural Youth Art Contest for a chance to win an Amazon gift card!   OAR’s art contest is officially open and accepting submissions now until February 28th. Building on OAR's recently introduced Friendship Tip Sheets, the theme for this year’s inaugural contest is “Friendship”. We look forward to seeing what friends and friendship look like through the eyes of children and youth. This will be their opportunity to tell a story about friendship in as abstract or literal sense as they would like. The contest is open to autistic children and their siblings, relatives, and friends. We will announce winners at the beginning of Autism Awareness Month in April and subsequently feature the winning art on that month’s donation E-cards. Special Education Virtual Conference

The Federation for Children with Special Needs' Annual Conference will be virtual this year!

When: Saturday, March 6, 2021

Visit fcsn.org/voc to learn about the workshops happening and to register for FCSN’s Visions of Community (VOC) annual conference which will take place on March 6th. The virtual conference will include intensive workshops on topics such as: IEPs and other special education issues, impact of trauma, self-care, health services and benefits, and transition planning, and will be offered in English, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish, and Vietnamese. We will offer networking pre-event opportunities the week leading to conference, so make sure to register soon.

VIRTUAL HS GRADUATION OPPORTUNITY!!

THE FEDERATION FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IS OFFERING A WONDERFUL FREE VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION TO ALL HS SENIORS ACROSS MASSACHUSETTS!

The Federation for Children with Special Needs sympathizes with Massachusetts families who are adjusting to students finishing their school year from home. With this comes knowing that our children will not be able to participate in school activities and milestones including graduation. We also know the resilience our community has especially when it comes to reimagining new ways to celebrate moments in our children’s lives. To pay homage to the resilience of our children, FCSN wants to help you celebrate with a virtual graduation! FCSN believes in promoting an inclusive community so we are inviting students living with and without disabilities. 

If you are a parent or caregiver to a HS senior would like to have them featured in our virtual graduation, please send us their name, school or program, along with their yearbook/senior photo to klarose@fcsn.org by Friday, May 8th. Please feel free to include their yearbook quote or even their favorite quote to script! Please be on the lookout for our celebratory tribute in early June to the amazing Class of 2020.
