ADVOCACY SERVICES


May include but are not limited to:
  • Initial family meeting
  • Detailed review of educational records and evaluations
  • Telephone or email consultation with parents &/or student, as needed
  • Guide in organizing materials
  • Work with the TEAM to develop goals, objectives/benchmarks, and accommodations for the IEP
  • Work with the TEAM to develop a 504 Plan
  • Provide an explanation of educational law as it may apply
  • Recommend strategies
  • Accompany family to IEP, 504, &/or parent/teacher meetings
  • Support in developing Student Health Plan
  • Provide a supportive and positive atmosphere throughout this process
  • Observe student in school setting
  • Facilitate the development of a Person Centered Plan

Pre-requisite to Internship: Completion of the FCSN (Federation for Children with Special Needs) PCTI (Parent Consultant Training Institute) Course

The internship will be catered to your needs and interests and can include but is not limited to:

  • Observing meetings with clients
  • Observing Team meetings
  • Observing Progress meetings
  • Guidance in: 
    • How to read and integrate data including evaluations, IEPs, progress monitoring data, etc
    • Creating strategic plans with clients
    • Organizing your paperwork
    • How to write meeting agendas
    • How to write partial rejections to IEPs
    • How to effectively communicate before, during, and after Team meetings
    • How to set-up a billing system
  • Being supervised on a pro-bono case
